"How can we help college students and small families plan and prepare healthy meals while addressing food wastage?"
Our primary objective was to create a one-stop-shop that helps users find their next meal while eliminating the stress and frustration of trying out new recipes. A recurring pain point for small families and students was food wastage. We aimed to address this by encouraging users to share meals using a community feature.
01
Research
Conducted user survey and generative user interviews to identify key pain points in meal planning for college students and small families.
Key insights include:
As novice cooks difficulty in following recipes
Interest in experimenting, but not able to find easy recipes to try
Limited time and often limited resources
Fresh meals everyday causing food wastage
02
Analysis
We synthesized the data and created a user persona and a journey map that helped us visualize all the learnings we had about our target user better. We realized that even though solutions are abundant in the health and diet space, users still struggle with food waste issues and managing food portions. This called for a different solution to solve this issue.
03
Design
The team brainstormed together with some early concept sketches. Refining them into low and mid fidelity prototypes. We then tested these prototypes with real users to get validation before refining them further into final product,
04
Test & Iterate
We conducted 3 rounds of usability testing (both moderated and unmoderated) with 8 unique users. Feedback uncovered key design issues that guided multiple iterations to refine align with user needs, including:
Improved Visibility: Addressed low contrast and small font sizes for better readability.
Simplified Interactions: Streamlined interactions for ease of use while cooking.
Enhanced Layout: Made the app more intuitive and easier to learn.
etc..
05
Final Design
The final design seamlessly integrated personalized meal planning, easy recipe discovery, and community-driven food sharing to address both user needs and food wastage. Key features include:
Personalized Suggestions: Tailored meal plans and recipe recommendations based on user preferences.
Smart Search: Users can search for recipes by ingredients or images for quick meal ideas.
Step-by-Step Recipes: Simplified instructions make cooking easy, even for beginners.
Community Sharing: A feature to share surplus meals, encouraging sustainable practices.
The design incorporated custom illustrations and a green color palette, reinforcing the focus on nutrition, health, and sustainability.
